5 Questions You Should Ask at Every Property Viewing

Viewing a property is about more than deciding whether you like the kitchen or can picture your sofa in the living room. It’s your opportunity to find out what the property is really like, and whether it’s the right home for you.

If you’re looking at houses for sale in Banbury or the surrounding areas, here are five questions worth asking at every property viewing.

1. How long has the property been on the market?

This can give you useful context about the property and its asking price. If it has been on the market for a while, it’s worth asking whether there have been any previous offers and if anything has changed since it was first listed.

It can also help you understand how competitive the property is likely to be.

2. What’s included in the sale?

Don’t assume everything you see will stay with the property.

Ask whether items such as integrated appliances, curtains, blinds, light fittings, garden furniture or sheds are included. Knowing exactly what you're buying can prevent surprises later on.

3. What are the running costs?

The asking price is only part of the cost of owning a home.

Ask about council tax, energy bills and any service charges or ground rent if applicable. If the property has a management company, particularly with apartments or newer developments, ask what the charges cover and whether they are expected to change.

4. Have there been any recent renovations or repairs?

Find out what work has been carried out and when.

This could include a new roof, boiler, windows, electrics, plumbing, extension or kitchen. If work has been completed, ask whether the relevant planning permissions, building regulations or guarantees are available.

It’s also worth asking if there are any known issues that may need attention.

5. Why are the owners moving?

This might seem like a simple question, but the answer can give you useful insight into the sale.

Are they upsizing, downsizing, relocating or simply looking for a change? Understanding their circumstances may also help you gauge how flexible they could be when it comes to timing and negotiations.

Don't be afraid to ask questions

A property viewing should be your chance to gather as much information as possible. Take your time, look beyond the styling and don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they might seem obvious.
